The average person has either heard of or read the 23rd Psalm at some point. Many have even memorized its six verses. This Psalm most likely owes its popularity to the beautiful and colorful picture it paints of serenity and REST.

“The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; He leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to His name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley; I will not be afraid, for You are close beside me. Your rod and Your staff protect and comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely Your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.” (NLT)

The Source of REST

The psalmist begins with an acknowledgment of the Source of REST. Yahweh, The LORD God is His Name. God’s Name describes His character and attributes. In Hebrew language and traditions, YHWH or Yahweh is the proper name for the God of Israel. Other names of God implied in Psalm 23 give additional clues to His attributes.

  1. The One Who Is; The Existing One; Ever-Living One; I AM Present Is What I AM
  2. The Absolute and Unchangeable One
  3. Jehovah; The One Bringing Into Being; Life-Giver
  4. Giver of Existence, Creator
  5. He Who Brings To Pass
  6. Performer Of His Promises
  7. He Will Be It–All That His Servants Look For
  8. God of Redemption
  9. He Who Causes Rain or Lightning to Fall
  10. He Who Gives Evidence of Being—Asserts His Being

God, the RESTFUL Shepherd is never more evident than when we need REST. He constantly gives proof of His existence so that all people may come to Him and get the REST they need. We exalt God when we allow other weary and worn out people to see Him as the Source of REST. He in turn asserts His Being and gives proof that HE IS.

Sheep die without a shepherd’s care. Throughout the Bible mankind is likened to sheep and God to a shepherd. As our Shepherd, God is the Source of REST, Who guides, protects and cares for us. We can REST because the Lord meets all our needs and watches over us with tender mercy and care; He strengthens, nourishes and tenderly builds us up so that we can fulfill what He has purposed for our lives; and the Lord feeds us with His Truth and Grace.

RESTING in God I have everything I need. I’m not in poverty, destitute or needy. His grace is sufficient for me; therefore I am not deficient. I am complete in Him.
