While it’s true that the poor economy has forced many companies to reevaluate college recruitment and hiring efforts, there is still hope for a realistic career life.
In the past, graduating seniors were able to take advantage of on-campus career fairs and employer interviews. However it will not be so easy to find a job in this economic downturn.
College graduates will have to compete with experienced workers who have been thrust into the job market due to layoffs, downsizings and business failures.
A Creative Job Search is the Key
The key to a career life after graduation is a creative job search. Here are a few things to consider when entering the job market.
- Set realistic career expectations. Although you may not be able to get your dream job right out of college, don’t take anything for granted, but pursue all opportunities—even the ones that look the least promising.
- Employers expect to hire 22% fewer college graduates than last year so in order to make a great impression, you must research and become very familiar with the companies you target in your job search. Having a good resume and polished interview skills is the entry fee. Knowing what the company is all about—its products/services and values may give you edge you need to land the job.
You will have to “think out of the box” if you want to be successful. Consider starting a business or creating your own niche. Brush up your skills and build business connections through networking.
