Are You Limiting Your Job Search Too Close to Home? Most job seekers tend to look for work close to home or within a manageable commuting distance; but the current economic climate has forced them to consider job opportunities in cities and states that they may not have given thought to in the past.
Many people have very real concerns about relocating to find work. Fears about the cost of living and lack of family ties and relationships are at the top of the list when evaluating job opportunities elsewhere.
If you are considering expanding your job search to other cities, use these tips to determine if relocation is right for you.
- Find out everything you can about the job opportunity and location. Familiarize yourself with the community. Read local newspapers, magazines and watch any videos you find.
- Make a list of companies and available job openings. Visit their offices, if possible, to see if working there fits your values and personal style.
- If it’s within your budget, take a trip to the city or state to network and set up informational interviews. In your cover letters, let hiring managers know the dates you’ll be in the city and available to interview.
Relocation will require a leap of faith. The unknown is always frightening at first; but with if you heed the advice of Philippians 4:6-7, you will be able to make that leap in perfect peace.
