Keep the Company from Learning of Your Job Search

christian careers, godly relationships, prayers for a secure job and guidance, prayer for career guidance, christian help occupation help, christian career, what does the bible say about careers, christian career guidance, asking god for career guidance, christian career planningOkay, you’ve decided to look for a job; but don’t want the company, your boss or co-workers to get wind of it. You’re afraid if they do; then that’s the end of your job and maybe even your career.

While you should be circumspect when searching for a job while employed, don’t give into job loss fears. You’ll end up being your own worst enemy and your worst fears will be realized.

Here are three strategies to keep the company and your boss from learning of your job search.

  1. Interview on your own time to avoid alerting your boss or the company that you are going on interviews. Where possible, schedule interviews for evenings, weekends or when you can naturally take a personal day or vacation.
  2. Channel any nervous energy or guilt you may have about interviewing and searching for a job. Focus on the work assignments you are currently handling and tackle them with renewed energy and enthusiasm—imagining that you are just starting a new job.
  3. Manage changes in the normal way you dress. One of the easiest things to spot is a person who shows up for work in a suit when he or she usually is casually dressed. In fact, many people joke and make comments like, “Are you interviewing today? I see you have on your interview suit?”

Above all, act with integrity—both with your current employer and prospective ones. Act with care and caution before discussing your job search or even hinting at dissatisfaction with your current employer.
