The activity they engage in is called work.

Since work tends to occupy from one-third to one-half of a typical day, diligence and care must be exercised when initiating and cultivating work relationships.

Most people have good intentions about improving their work relationships, but tend to stop short of putting them into action. Here are three key tips for cultivating work relationships:

  • Build a personal community. Get to know people you consider to be supporters and develop successful work relationships with new business contacts. Keep your focus on how you can help others achieve and succeed. When you stop concentrating on yourself and start to collaborate with co-workers and leaders, the entire work unit thrives.
  • Be consistent in your treatment of others. Your interaction with co-workers and bosses will characterize and label your professional reputation. Treat everyone with respect. Treat everyone you meet with dignity and respect regardless of their status. Resist the urge to put down others to make you look great.
  • Develop a positive mental attitude about people. Building relationships is hard work. Look for similarities instead of differences. Find points of agreement and search for things in each individual’s personality that complement your style.
