In general, a good boss’ main goal should be to create a respectful and productive relationship with workers. So, how do you catch a good boss in action?
Consider these traits, attitudes and abilities that exemplify good bosses.
- A good boss treats workers fairly, is self-disciplined and can forgo present security for future returns. Because of this he or she inspires others to do the same. A good boss is quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to get angry.
- A good boss causes workers to genuinely engage. He or she directs and manages by example, having experienced the work which he or she seeks to motivate others to do.
- A good boss models honesty and integrity, and works hard to maintain these qualities. Integrity means keeping one’s word, and dealing truthfully with others. A good boss avoids resorting to tactics of manipulation.
- A good boss focuses on mission instead of money, is hardworking, conscientious and highly motivated to achieve results. He or she is a servant leader instead of a ruler. Ruling suggests telling workers what to do and often ends in lording it over people in arrogance. A servant leader encourages followers through collaboration, trust, insight, and the ethical use of influence.
- A good boss has a positive attitude and does not fear failure but learns from it. He or she understands that having a positive attitude is very important, and demonstrates this through perseverance in the face of failure and defeat while remaining positive even when faced with setbacks.
- A good boss helps workers create meaningful careers for themselves. He or she is not threatened by the competence of others and assists them in achieving their career goals.
- A good boss considers others, and seeks to do things that benefit everyone involved. He or she is prepared to change and is skilled in equipping others to embrace change also.
- A good boss takes great pains to become and remain a positive role model. He or she is willing to learn from others and invests considerable time learning and enhancing skills through reading, attending seminars, and engaging in on-the-job leadership development activities.
- A good boss is faithful to others, does not overly dwell on followers weaknesses but inspires loyalty and team spirit.
You must learn to be a good boss. It doesn’t just come naturally. While you can absorb a lot from books written by leadership gurus and take countless leadership skill courses, unless you change your behavior, attitude and actions, the result will not necessarily be a good one.
