A successful job search may well mean taking a temporary assignment or two. Many job seekers have frowned on temporary work because they feel it could distract them from getting a more permanent work arrangement. However, the opposite may well be true in this tight job market.
Being able to show that you have remained gainfully employed while looking for a job might just give you the edge you need to land a full-time opportunity.
Depending on the job you take, a temporary assignment can be flexible enough to allow you to take time to network and interview with prospective companies.
Added to this, many temporary agencies have “temp to perm” assignments that provide a chance for the company to see you in action and give you a feel for whether or not you would like to work there.
An emerging entrepreneurial trend is combining temporary work with self-employment. I call this the “contingent-preneur”, who purposefully takes on temporary work assignments without wanting a more permanent arrangement.
You should consider starting your own business as a contract worker if you like the flexibility and autonomy that comes with being in business for yourself.
