Many people approach a job search with fear and trepidation—especially if they’ve just received a pink slip or layoff notice. Panic sets in immediately as they begin to tell themselves they’ll never get another job again…EVER!
If this perspective is not changed, in a short while they’ll start to believe it. But, you don’t have to go down that road. Instead of lamenting the bad hand that’s been dealt, consider these four things BEFORE you start a job search.
Timing
Your current circumstances and situation will determine the best time to start a job search. You’ll need to consider how much time you have to look for work including your financial circumstances. Do you have enough money for living expenses or to pay your debts until you find a new job? Will unemployment compensation or money from a severance package be enough or will you have to start looking for work immediately? Serious thought must be given to the amount of time you have before starting a job search.
Staying Power
The need to work and earn a living is a reality that every job seeker must face. Many a job search is derailed because of the lack of staying power required to meet this need. To be successful in a job search, you will have to expend lots of energy and be more determined and resilient than ever.
Desired Outcome
In order to get a job you need to know what kind of job you want, where it is and how you’re going to get it. Don’t just rush headlong into resume writing and networking; you must first discover what you want to do and decide on a job objective or goal.
Income and Pay
Rather than remain unemployed, many job seekers jump at the first job that is offered even if it pays less than what they made in the past. You will need to be cautious about targeting jobs that pay substantially less than you can afford to take. Do not out of desperation accept a salary that doesn’t allow you to pay the bills or living expenses. You need to figure out the point at which you are willing to walk away from a job opportunity even before applying for it.
